Our mission is to represent the First Universalist Church of Minneapolis in the broader peace community at the local, state, continental, and international level and to facilitate connecting members of the congregation to that community. We hold high the flame of the liberal spirit and are a welcoming congregation. Our faith is based on the principle of the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Brief historical highlights of peace related activities:
1859, Church founded under leadership of W.D. Washburn; 1897, Established Unity Settlement House in North Mpls; 1965, Church minister John Cummins marches with Martin Luther King at Selma; 1984, Unity Settlement House becomes First Universalist Foundation with endowment for making community grants; 1984, Church established as Sanctuary for Central American refugees; 1985, Church becomes Nuclear Free Zone; 1988, Church dedicated as Peace Site; 2002 Church voted to oppose a U.S. preventive war against Iraq.
Membership: Committee membership is open to all members and friends of First Universalist Church.
Number of members: Church membership is 800. Involvement in committee activities varies from a few members up to several hundred depending on the project or activity undertaken.
